Members Meeting October 17th

The meeting was called to order at 7:45 PM at the Half King on 23rd St. attended by Mike Cook, Ray Fusco, Jeff Folmsbee, Bill Bergeron, Marcus Demuth and Dan Starer.

1.    A motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the minutes from the September 13 Guild meeting.
2.    Motion made and seconded to elect Marcus Demuth to the Board of Directors as a Director At Large, which was passed unanimously. (Bill B. and Jeff F. exercised proxy votes for a majority of the members who were not in attendance.)
3.    Bill B. reviewed highlights of what was covered at the Sept. 13 meeting.
4.    The need for a website was discussed and Bill reviewed the plan to build it as a blog that would be easy for members to manage, that will grow organically to support a calendar of events, a mailing list and other features. The plan is to have the site up within a month.
5.    The plan to sponsor a Paddling Safety Awareness Day with the Coast Guard, with the participation of other organizations such as NYHP, FDNY and the PEP Marine Unit, in mid-May to coincide with the CG’s Boating Safety Week, was discussed.
6.    The Guild’s potential role in mediating certain issues that have recently been discussed on the NYCkayaker list serv, such as CG/human-powered boating interactions, was discussed.  It was agreed that this would be a good area for us to pursue.
7.    Winter pool rolling sessions were discussed. Jeff said he’d contact the Chelsea piers rep at the next HRPT Advisory Council meeting and Bill said he’d ask the Brooklyn Heights gym. Insurance was discussed and it was observed that it might be late to make it happen this year.
8.    Mike volunteered to draft an informational one-sheet on the Guild for website and other public relations purposes.
9.    Marcus suggested that the Guild offer useful and fun services and activities for the paddling community, such as those sponsored by Connyak. Ideas floated for include classifieds on our website; tours (with disclaimers); host a rough water symposium; hold a Guild barbeque on the barge; organize a spring circumnav; fitness programs; sponsor a film festival, such as the Teva Water Film Festival.  Much discussion followed and Marcus agreed to look into the Teva Film Festival.

10.    The meeting was adjourned at 9:20pm.

Submitted for board review on Oct 29, 2007,
Jeff Folmsbee
