Membership
Show your support for independent paddling and human-powered boating by joining the Hudson River Paddlers Guild!
Membership is open to the general public with an interest in any paddle or human-powered boating sport, at any level of experience.
Members support safe practices on and off the water, favor free public access to waterways, and believe that human-powered boaters should be caretakers of the river environment.
The Guild advocates on behalf of human-powered boaters and reserves the right to exclude membership on the basis of potential conflict of interest.
Background
The Guild was founded in 2006 to advocate for and support local independent paddlers, many of whom had been recently displaced by the closing of Pier 63. Since then its mission and programs have grown to support a broader range of issues important to all human-powered boaters.
The Guild actively contributed in the RFP process which resulted in the Hudson River Park Trust’s award to New York River Sports for the management of the Pier 66 Boathouse.
The Guild continues to speak out in favor of protecting and expanding public access to the water, and promotes safe practices and communication among paddlers, rowers and power-driven mariners.
It undertakes initiatives and supports those of other paddling and rowing organizations to work together on issues that we have in common.
Associations
The Guild stays informed on waterfront issues that are important to human-powered boaters and actively communicates with and supports the missions of local civic and maritime organizations and committees such as The Hudson River Park Trust, The Hudson River Park Trust Advisory Council, Friends of the Hudson River Park, USCG Passenger Vessel Safety Committee, The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, Pier 66 Maritime, New York River Sports, Downtown Boathouse and many other waterfront development and paddling organizations.
Activities
While the Guild coordinates with other paddling groups and recreational support organizations to inform and influence the agencies that control and regulate access to and use of the waterways, we have fun too.
Guild members initiate many local, multi-day and international paddling trips year-round, participate in community awareness paddling programs, and provide kayak support for area swim races.
The Guild presents an annual Paddling Film Festival and get-together for area paddlers.
We also organize “get-to know each other better” programs, with the Coast Guard and other enforcement agencies and commercial maritime interests, where we learn more about their concerns and they get a better understanding of our skills and capabilities (as well as paddle with us).
Other programs are in the works to raise awareness of the complexities of paddling and rowing in the New York Metro Area, and to better educate human powered boaters in safe practices.
