MODERATED DISCUSSION EXCERPTS
LIGHTS AND STROBES
We’re just getting started sifting through the mountain of info from “Captains & Paddlers Day” but here’s a short (5:10) clip from the discussion which touches on the use of strobes as a non-emergency visibility tool -- specifically, to the surprise of many paddlers, the CG said that a strobe can be the best way let other mariners know you’re out there, if used on an intermittent basis.
BM1 Paul Church, USCG: “You don’t want to run it on all the time, it’s just when you get into a traffic situation where you go ‘I don’t think he sees me’. . . you just put it on . . . once you get that sense ‘that captain sees me’ . . . you turn it off.”
